In the north, the 340 km long coast lies in both a straight and sinuous line, with attractive islands, dotted by numerous well sheltered bathing resorts. Abrupt cliffs of more than 120 m high interrupt the miles of beaches and marshland. The four large Hanseatic cities are also in this region. The plateau ”Mecklenburg-Seeplatten”, is sprinkled with almost 1800 lakes, often connected by natural and artificial canals as well as wooded hills and miles of heather and pine.
