Sea of crystal and mountains of ice.The marble of the Apuan Alps, the marble of Michelangelo, shines white against the sky and towers over the longest beach in Tuscany. The region’s most imposing peaks are reflected in the sea of Versilia. Here on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, Giacomo Puccini composed his operas. Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are the two little sea capitals of Tuscany. Inland, up the course of the river Magra, we come to the valley of Lunigiana in search of Medieval castles. Past the beaches of Versilia, the Tuscan coast stretches to the park of Migliarino-San Rossore, splendid humid forest beside coastal dunes, and past the source of the Arno, here we are at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Livorno, Tuscany’s most important port, faces the rocks of Meloria. Further south, the cliffs of Castiglioncello and Calafuria. Only a few kilometres further on and the sea again takes over: the sea of Vada and Cecina is a long strip of sand shining under the sun.
